About Dubbo | NSW | By Lily's Florist Dubbo

Lily’s Florist Dubbo is proud to be one of the more than 3,500 local retail businesses in this thriving, dynamic, regional city. Dubbo services a huge geographical area, the Orana region,  that is one-third the size of the whole state of New South Wales! There are more than 40,000 people living in the city and well over 120,000 people living in its surrounding area. The traditional owners are the Tubbagah People of the Wiradjuri Nation.

John Oxley, the famous explorer, was the first non-Indigenous person to visit the area way back in 1818. Robert Dulhunty was the first settler starting out as a squatter running sheep and cattle around 1830. A police station, lock-up and courthouse were built by 1848 making a grand total of four buildings including a store and an inn. Gazetted as a village the following year, Dubbo was invigorated by the gold rush of the 1860’s and the rail line reaching it in 1881.

It’s smack dab in the middle of where the Mitchell, Newell and Golden Highways meet so it’s the crossroads for NSW, linked to Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Broken Hill and Adelaide. It’s 373 kilometres north-west of Sydney and 275 metres above sea level. Being at the intersection of major road, rail and air transport, it’s an easy place to get to and offers some unique attractions and events for the locals and visitors alike. It’s a great lifestyle living in Dubbo with good education and work options, affordable housing and a range of health and professional services available to support such a large centre.

The inhabitants of inland Australia are renowned for their resourceful and energetic qualities. The people of Dubbo and district have created a sustainable and growing community with a diverse range of community, business and industry services for the entire region. There’s no need to go anywhere else with over 500 events held every year, including a jazz festival and major sporting events.

The natural beauty of the area is well-known to birdwatchers, bushwalkers and anyone who loves the great outdoors. Who hasn’t heard of the spectacular Taronga Western Plains Zoo?  There’s the observatory to gaze at the stars and the beautifully restored Dubbo Gaol. There are wineries and Dundullimal Homestead, a rare example of an original timber slab homestead. There’s the Western Plains Cultural Centre. There’s the Macquarie River for fishing, canoeing, kayaking and giving life to the region with its welcome waters. Did you know the Royal Flying Doctor’s Service started round here?

The Dubbo Golf Club has been around since 1903 would you believe, moved to its current location in 1921 and expanded from 18 holes to an awesome 27 holes in 1995. Are you ready for the challenge and the kangaroos?
See what we mean? No wonder it’s known as the City of Smiles.   Dubbo and its history is fascinating and so are its people. That’s why we love being the local florists. We get to add to the life and happiness of our wonderful area in our own small way: getting gorgeous flowers out there.
